Getting started on anything can be so simple can’t it? There has been so much written and coined about taking that first little itty bitty step. “The journey of 10,000 miles begins with the first step” is one I remember hearing as a kid, and it is true.
There was a great movie I love to remind my clients about when they are feeling stuck and unable to take that first little step. The movie was “What about Bob?” with Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. A great reminder of how silly we can be about taking that first step and a fantastic opportunity to laugh at them ( and ourselves). I recommend that if you haven’t watched it lately, (or at all) go rent it; or nowadays download it and keep it handy for the future.
Getting back to the start line, it is a physical law of nature that we should just sit here and do what we have been doing, nothing more. Remember the laws of inertia in high school? “A body in motion tends to stay in motion and a body at rests tends to stay at rest”.
Well there you have it – situation solved. Your desire NOT to want to start whatever it is that you don’t want to start is merely a condition of the universal laws of physics. Your body wants to stay at rest!! How can you possibly try to bump heads with mother nature? Let’s go take a nap.
Unfortunately, mother nature likes to play head games so she invented another law of physics that will deteriorate you if you plan to stay at rest. Many things in your life will suffer, so of course we don’t do that. I remember this lesson learned from Zig Ziglar, a couple of decades ago “A ship will rot out faster sitting in the harbor than if on the high seas, a plane will rust out quicker sitting on the tarmac than it will being flown everyday, a vacant home will certainly deteriorate quickly if someone isn’t living in it and taking care of it.” So it goes with you and yours. Cancel the nap.
So what can you do today (NOT tomorrow TODAY) to advance the desire to achieve this thing you’ve been putting off? First, let me remind you that you can call or email me to get a 15 minute laser coaching session to increase your clarity around the issue. (Shameless plug? Absolutely! Supporting you and your dreams? Absolutely)
The step you take today, doesn’t have to be very big, it just has to be. Heck you could consider reading this blog as a step in the process of getting into action, providing of course that you actually took a second action TODAY.
That would in fact constitute taking two actions, so let me advance a new concept and definition of the present day. Do nothing towards your goals and its just Today ( as in you still have TO do something); If you take just two little actions (like read this blog and make that call, write a plan, make a list, etc) then the present day becomes TWOday.
You may have noticed that I am constantly coming up with quips like the above to remind myself and you of the difference in the way of thinking about something that is important. A whimsical approach that hopefully will stay with you for the day and coming days to bring a smile or a grin as you do what you want to do. Sort of like that song that plays in your head long after you heard it on the radio.
I hope I can help you achieve BIG in the future and just get started on that thing you want TWOday.
So if you let me work with you today as your “Success Doctor”, let me give you a prescription for continued success; Take two actions and call (actually email me) me in the morning. Good luck with making your move(s) TWOday – I look forward to hearing from you soon.
